Frankly speaking this post was planned a little later, but on the basis of interest shown by some of YOU, Our esteemed readers, I am compelled from my inside to share the list of things to prepare for IBPS PO interview. Though this list may not be comprehensive as per some of you, but it would definitely be of help.
Generally asked questions under ‘YOU AS A PERSON’
- Introduce Yourself.
- Tell us something that you have not written in your Application form.
- I see your father working in X industry (say X = Defence in your case), why didn’t you plan to follow your father’s footsteps. At least he is there to guide you in X industry.
- Tell us about your interests.
- Why should we hire you?
KEY – Explain your strengths in comparison to others.
- Tell us some of your weaknesses.
KEY – Just utter a weakness that is not harmful for the profile you are being looked for like I am a Foodie person. The interviewer may say MORE…tell some other stupid one but don’t bow down under his pressure. If the interviewer insists, say apart from this I have all other weaknesses that are characteristics of Human being.
The interviewer is expected to smile and move on to next question.
- Explain yourself in one word.
KEY – A strongest personality trait that you wish to portray in the interview.
- Explain yourself in ten words (a short sentence).
- You said you belong to Y town. Tell something that your town is famous for.
KEY – Read history of your town/city/state; also read anything that is specific about the bank (you are going to have interview for) in your town/city/state.
- Family values related indirect questions like Will you bribe for getting some task done?
My experience: A year back I left my last job because of clash of my crucial examinations with an international job assignment. Though, I could have cooked up a story and could have continued with the job but I told my manager about my exams and my unwillingness to take up that next assignment outside. After clearing the written exam, during my interview, I was asked the reason to leave that cushy job. When I narrated the whole incident to the interviewer, he started asking questions related to ethics and bribe.
The interviewer said assuming your father is on death bed. Only way to save him is to pay bribe for admission to hospital. What will you do?
Interviewer may sometimes try to put you in a corner as he tried with me. In such cases, MY TAKE – Say what you are actually going to do in such a situation and also explain the reason with strong emphasis on your value system.
YOU AS A STUDENT
Refer to my post : SECOND PHASE OF INTERVIEW PREPARATION!
YOU AS A PROFESSIONAL
To understand the Psychology of being professional or how people/interviewers perceive professional attitude, refer my first post here.
Generally, a professional is expected to be well read and knowledgeable at least in the field he has interest in or he is working in. But,
THE EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGHER FROM SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO ENTER IN A FIELD.
IN YOUR CASE THE FIELD IS BANKING AND THE INTERVIEWING BANK IS THE ONE WHICH IS HAVING EXPECTATIONS FROM YOU.
What kind of expectations?
That you know or at least try to know:
Banking related terms
RBI and its functioning
Insurance sector related questions
The history and present working of the interviewing bank and the profile it has to offer.
YOU SHOULD KNOW THE BANK AND PROFILE INSIDE OUT. MANY QUESTIONS ARE ASKED ON THIS.
NOW, YOU HAVE READ ABOUT BANK BUT YOU MAY ASK, WHAT CAN BE ASKED IN THE PROFILE?
From experience, many banks expect YOU to sell their financial products. So you need to know a little bit of marketing terms like:
What is Product Life Cycle?
Product Life Cycle
Middlemen in Marketing
Branding and Packaging
It is suggested to take an overview of these marketing terms; though, a detailed study is not recommended. Since you would be banking big on the interview, leaving them would not be wise.

Investopedia – for Banking, Finance, Insurance.
