Profile of a Bank Probationary Officer

Starting 14th Jan, many of you will be appearing for the IBPS CWE PO common interview. One of the most common and sought after questions during these interviews would be – “What is the role/profile of a Bank Probationary Officer and where do you see yourself in next 5-10 years?”

Here, we are trying to provide a comprehensive detail about the job profile of a Bank Probationary Officer and also, their growth prospects within the Bank. This might help in answering above question.

Probationary Officer is the first level appointment for Bank Officers. After joining as a Bank PO, he/she shall be put into probation for 2 years wherein they’ll be given intensive training. During this time, they will also be asked to work on assignments across different departments of the bank to gain exposure of the daily operation & working of the bank. Candidates must be prepared for frequent transfers during the probation period. At the end of the probation period, they are subjected to a screening test. Those who qualify the test are confirmed as Junior Officer Management Grade-I. In most banks, a few of them who perform better in this test get promoted to next higher grade i.e. Middle Officer Management Grade-II.

After the confirmation, they are assigned various responsibilities such as accounting, marketing, finance, investment as well as billing. They also handle customer complaints. A good communication skill and an ability to resolve conflicts come in handy in resolving these complaints. With experience, they are provided with an opportunity to work in areas such as planning, budgeting, investment management etc.

There will be promotion opportunities in every 3-4 years. Bright candidates can easily enter into senior management in a span of 12-14 years. You’ll be surprised to know that most of the heads of Public Sector Banks had started as Probationary Officers. So, candidates who are looking for bank jobs should understand that performance and attitude are always appreciated in Banks and as they say SKY IS THE LIMIT for the top performers.

Hope this helps. Stay tuned for more such blogs in coming days.
